Diamond Willow Amethyst Mine

Diamond Willow Amethyst Mine is one of three fee dig mines near Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. The mine is located 62 km northeast of the city next to Big Pearl Lake and is neighbour to Blue Point Amethyst Mine, another pay-to-dig amethyst mine.

The mine is seasonal as are most things on the north shore of Lake Superior. The public is welcome daily from mid May through mid October. You pay $40 per 2 gallon bucket of material you choose to keep (as of 2025). And while the mine will provide buckets for collecting your amethyst, you won’t be able to take those with you so bring something to put your finds in when you leave.

Children are welcome at Blue Point Amethyst Mine but those under 16 require adult supervision. Some tools are provided but you can also bring your own such as hand shovels, chisels, and hammers. No large sledge hammers are allowed and you’ll be required to wear eye protection if using a hammer and chisel. As this is northern Ontario, you’ll also be wise to bring lots of bug spray, sun hats, and plenty of water. Snacks aren’t a bad idea either as you’ll be working hard getting hunting amethyst.
