Ancient Echoes Interpretive Centre

Ancient Echoes Interpretive Centre is a small, volunteer supported museum in the Saskatchewan hamlet of Herschel. Herschel is located 150 km southwest of Saskatoon and 35 km northwest of Rosetown in the Eagle Creek valley. The centre resides in the former elementary school which closed in 1993.

The museum is seasonal, though winter viewings are available by appointment. The claim to fame of Ancient Echoes Interpretive Centre is Big Bert, a 19 foot crocodile fossil found along the banks of the Carrot River in 1991. Big Bert is the largest and best preserved fossil of its type.

Plesiosaurs have also been found in the Herschel area. The first now lives in the Royal Saskatchewan Museum in Regina. Indigenous Petroglyphs have also been discovered in the region and the interpretive centre includes some on their outdoor tours.

Tiny towns on the prairies, like Herschel, need all the support they can get to stay alive. Visitors to a museum like this are part of that lifeblood. Don’t be afraid to explore outside the famed tourist spots.
