Amethyst Mine Panorama

Amethyst Mine Panorama is one of three fee dig amethyst mines near Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. The mine is located 60 km northeast of the city next to Elbow Lake, about 4.5 kilometres west (as the crow flies) of the other two amethyst mines; Blue Point and Diamond Willow.

The mine is seasonal as are most things on the north shore of Lake Superior. The public is welcome daily from June 1 through October 1. Access to the mine facilities is $12.50 admission fee per person (as of 2025) and children under 5 are free. Dig your own amethyst costs $6 per pound.

Unlike the other two pay-to-dig mines, Amethyst Mine Panorama doesn’t allow hammers to be used. They provide all tools needed and will assist you on your hunt. Basically, you will be searching tailings from the mine so any amethyst you find will be exposed already.

Self-guided and guided tours of the surface mine are available as are school and group tours. They’ll teach you all about amethyst and how it’s mined. Fancier crystal specimens can be purchased from the gift shop. As this is northern Ontario, you’ll also be wise to bring lots of bug spray, sun hats, and plenty of water. Snacks aren’t a bad idea either as you’ll be working hard getting hunting amethyst.
