Klinker Opal Property

The Klinker Opal Property is currently the only opal fee dig mine in Canada. It is located in Vernon, British Columbia though the mine itself is an hour’s drive west of the city. Paid digs meet on the west shore of Okanagan Lake which reduces the drive to the mine by half or more.

There is certainly opal to be found here. You’ll leave with common opal at a minimum and with some luck, a few pieces of colourful precious opal. Just don’t expect Australia quality opal. You won’t be digging up amazing chunks the likes of which you see online.

Klinker Opal Property is operated by Canadian Opals. The face of the operation is Opal Bob, who will be your guide during your fee dig. He’s a quirky fellow but happy to share his knowledge and help you find some opals. Digs are scheduled when weather permits from spring through fall.

It can get pretty hot at the mine in the summer so be sure to bring sunscreen, hats, and lots of water. There are no services at the mine. You’ll need to bring everything in yourself including a picnic lunch. You can dry camp here if you chose, but this option is only available to paid diggers. All the details are shared on the official website.
