The T. Rex Discovery Centre is home to Scotty, the T. Rex who was found in the nearby Frenchman River Valley by the town’s high school principal. Scotty is often referred to as the largest T. Rex discovered globally and is the largest of any dinosaur discovered in Canada.
An extension of the Royal Saskatchewan Museum, the T. Rex Discovery Centre is located in Eastend, a small town in southwestern Saskatchewan. The town lies within the Frenchman River Valley and appears as an oasis of green in the otherwise brown, prairie surroundings. The centre itself is found up on the valley wall, near its top, built right into the rock. It’s an impressive structure that masterfully blends into the landscape.
The museum is an enjoyable visit for all ages. Scotty is impressive and there are plenty of other displays including fossils, ancient mammals and reptiles, and a meteorite. Dinosaur related activities both indoors and outdoors will keep the kids entertained. Have a picnic or stroll the hillside trails to complement the exhibits.
A trip to Eastend isn’t an easy day trip from most urban areas. Even Regina, the provincial capital, is four hours away. Including the T. Rex Discovery Centre in your summer vacation or weekend camping plans is a great option. Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park is only an hour west of Eastend and Grasslands National Park is two hours to the east.
