Barnes Creek Recreational Panning Reserve is located north of Highway 6 just a few kilometres east of the Needles – Fauquier ferry across Upper Arrow Lake. The area is not heavily developed but there are some recreational properties around and a nearby retreat. The land is mostly forested though plenty of forestry is occuring in the region.
The panning reserve is a 2 km by 1 km rectangular tract of land straddling Barnes Creek. Much of the land is privately owned, so be warry of trespassing. Gravel roads provide access on either side of the reserve but getting to Barnes Creek itself will require a hike. A secondary, smaller creek enters the panning reserve on the east side. This creek is easier to access but doesn’t offer much in the way of prospective panning territory.
Barnes Creek Recreational Panning Reserve is not especially isolated or difficult to get to. It’s not far from popular summer vacation spots and I’d expect it to have been checked out by avid panners. However, there is no online evidence of anyone finding gold there despite the area all around it being claimed up.
This panning reserve may be barren. Or maybe it’s a forgotten gem waiting for your triumphant arrival. If you’re vacationing in the BC interior, put it on your list to check out along with nearby Kettle Creek Recreational Panning Reserve.
