Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario may be better known for it’s business school but it also has a quality geology program. Fitting, then, that the campus is home to an earth science museum, the Miller Museum of Geology.
Geology museums on university campuses are far more common than I realized. Several schools host quality museums often with free admission. At the Miller Museum of Geology, you can see excellent fossil and mineral specimens, learn about the geology around Kingston, and play in the new augmented reality sandbox. You can explore the museum yourself or if part of a group, participate in one of several guided programs targeted towards school-aged children
Kingston is located at the east end of Lake Ontario, where the Great Lakes outflow into the St. Lawrence River. The southern extent of the Canadian Sheild reaches Kingston, providing fascinating geology all around. The city is also rich in history having been a major military centre during the War of 1812 and eventually becoming the first capital of the Province of Canada. And don’t forget the famed Kingston Penitentiary, once home to many of Canada’s most notorious criminals.
