The University of Waterloo is globally renowned for its computer science, engineering, and mathematics programs and deservedly so. But there’s far more to this Southern Ontario university as evidenced by the University of Waterloo Earth Sciences Museum.
As my alma mater, I fondly remember hanging out with friends between classes at the Peter Russell Rock Garden imagining giant chunks of rock one day adorning my own yard. That hasn’t come to fruition … yet … but I’m no less enthusiastic about looking at rocks and minerals of all shapes and sizes.
Similar to UBC’s Pacific Museum of Earth, the University of Waterloo Earth Sciences Museum is a fantastic place to explore rocks and minerals, fossils, and geology in general. There are dinosaurs and ice-age mammals on display as well. And the aforementioned rock garden offers a unique outdoor museum experience with benches to sit beneath shade trees. Perhaps a picnic is in order.
Located in south-central Ontario, Waterloo is an easy drive west of Toronto (401 traffic, notwithstanding). Known for its two Universities and twin city, Kitchener, home of Oktoberfest, Waterloo is a key part of Canada’s own “Silicon Valley”. It’s a great area to visit with plenty of history and a firm hand on the future. Adding a free museum visit to your itinerary is a no-brainer.
