It’s only fitting that a place lovingly referred to as The Rock should have a geology-focused science centre. Memorial University’s Johnson Geo Centre is exactly that. Located on famed Signal Hill, the centre is part of Memorial University’s new Signal Hill Campus. That’s roughly 4 km due east of the main campus in St. John’s.
As alluded to above, Johnson Geo Centre is more of a science centre than strictly a museum. Let’s call it a hybrid. It is nonetheless focused on all things geology, particularly those pertinent to Newfoundland and Labrador. As such, expect lots of rocks, mining, and, of course, offshore oil and gas information. Exhibits explore beyond the land, looking down into the depths of the ocean that surrounds the province. Others probe beyond the province to include the planet and the entire solar system.
Any trip to St. John’s will be a soul-filling cultural and natural adventure. Newfoundland is like no other place in Canada. Along with the historical must-sees, be sure to add Johnson Geo Centre to your itinerary.
