The Faculty of Environment, Earth, and Resources at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg is home to the Ed Leith Cretaceous Menagerie. This modest museum is home to four “dinosaur” skeletons, though only one is a genuine dinosaur. The other three are a mosasaur, a bony fish, and a giant sea turtle.
Alongside these magnificent beasts are displays and educational panels describing what Manitoba was like during the Cretaceous Period. Manitoba was beneath the Western Interior Seaway for most of the Cretaceous, hence the focus on aquatic creatures. Additionally, select specimens from the R. B. Ferguson Museum of Mineralogy are on exhibit.
The Ed Leith Cretaceous Menagerie is next to the Geological Sciences Museum, though the latter does not have its own online presence. Similarly, the R. B. Ferguson Museum of Mineralogy is lacking a current website. Consider the three a package deal when visiting Manitoba’s capital city. Admission is free of charge.
