Grand, government supported museums are wonderful, but there’s something special about passion projects. Canadian Rockies Earth Science Resource Centre (CRESRC) is one such project.
Located in downtown Canmore in Alberta’s Rocky Mountains, CRESRC is the brainchild of Rick Green, a semi-retired geophysicist in the Canadian oil patch. Long active with the Canmore Museum, Mr. Green created Canadian Rockies Earth Science Resource Centre “to give geoscience information, outreach, and programming for junior / senior high school and university students, new industry employees, and also for the general public.”
Though small (2000 square feet), the CRESRC holds excellent collections from fellow industry veterans including local fossils and minerals. Talisman Energy donated their geoscience library to the museum and the centre also has some seismic to share courtesy of Pulse Seismic. And CRESRC continues to work with the Canmore Museum on some exhibits.
Tourists hardly need additional reasons to visit Canmore. Nor do locals, for that matter. The town is stunning; Banff 2.0, if you will. You’re surrounded by some of the most stunning geology on the planet, so it’s great to see a museum in its midst dedicated to this science and the energy industry that has driven Alberta for over a century. Be sure to check it out when strolling the streets on your next visit.
