Manuels River is a multi-purpose event facility housing a museum dedicated to the spectacularly preserved trilobites preserved in the canyon walls of Manuels River. It is located in Conception Bay South just 20 km west of downtown St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.
Naming is admittedly a bit confusing. The museum opened in 2013 as the Manuels River Hibernia Interpretation Centre. However, currently it appears to operate simply as Manuels River which is a bit confusing since that’s the name of the river right next to it. And I believe Hibernia was in the name as a sponsor; the museum does not present any exhibity related to the Hibernia platform or oilfield itself. I could be wrong as I’ve yet to visit personally.
The purpose of the museum is to preserve and educate visitors about the Cambrian fossils found in the rock formations exposed by the river. Most notable of these are the trilobites and the renowned MR1 Trilobite, in particular. Tours and hikes are available which will take you to the actual fossil sites.
A trip to St. John’s is always a treat. Experiencing Newfoundland culture is something everyone should do. While you’re there, be sure to head over to Manuels River and enjoy the amazing ancient life on display.
