The Royal Alberta Museum is the largest museum in western Canada. It is located in a fancy, new (2018 opening) 419 square foot home a couple blocks east of Rogers Place in downtown Edmonton.
The museum was established in 1967 with the goal to “collect, preserve, interpret, and exhibit objects and specimens related to the heritage of Alberta’s people and natural environment.” A broad, natural history museum, the Royal Alberta Museum houses a collection of more than 5.1 million artifacts. It also supports reserch and education.
Those interested in geology and natural history will enjoy the gems and minerals collections, the Ancient Alberta collection which includes fossils and dinosaurs, and the Ice Age Alberta collection of mammals. The dinosaur collection is not as extensive as the one at Royal Tyrrell Museum in Drumheller but will still intrigue dino lovers.
Being located in the heart of the provincial capital, the RAM is an obvious addition to any road trip or lengthier stay in Edmonton. Visit during the day prior to a hockey game, as a bookend to a football game, or complement a mall trip (you know the one). Edmonton has every imaginable service and amenity plus several other attractions to fill out your visit.
