Goldstream River Recreational Panning Reserve

Goldstream River Recreational Panning Reserve is somewhat remote, hiding away in the wilderness between Revelstoke and Mica Dam. Getting there requires a 100 km drive northward on Highway 23 along the east side of Lake Revelstoke and Columbia River. A further 5 km drive inland on a forestry road along the north side of Goldstream River gets you to the 2.5 km x 1 km panning reserve straddling the river.

It is true wilderness out there, so come properly prepared. It’s a long way from help in emergencies.

We have found no online proof of gold being present in this panning reserve. Its remoteness likely limits the number of panners who’ve tried it. That said, the river and its tributaries around the panning reserve have been claimed, so there appears to be gold in the area.

There are a couple bars showing on satellite imagery and point bars will be exposed during low flow. Online comments in gold panning groups suggest the terrain is rough and the slope to the river steep. They also mention that off grid camping is available. It could make for a fun adventure, but, again, come properly prepared.

Getting to Goldstream River Recreational Panning Reserve and back will make for a longer day trip. Revelstoke is a great town and will make a perfect homebase for your panning adventure. With accommodations, food, and service, not to mention a great vibe, you’ll enjoy your stay even if the gold doesn’t find your pan..
