Royal Tyrrell Museum is Canada’s preeminent palaeontological museum and one of the greatest on the planet. Filled with amazing exhibits of dinsosaurs, marine reptiles, early mammals, and fossils from many eras there is plenty here to thrill young and old.
Located in Alberta’s badlands, seven kilometers west of downtown Drumheller, Royal Tyrrell Museum is a three hour drive from Edmonton and an hour and three quarters from Calgary. Surrounded by the colourful sedimentary terrain of the Red Deer River Valley in Midland Provincial Park, geology is all around you. As is the sun, most days. Dress for cold in the winter and heat in the summer!
A crown jewel in Alberta’s tourist lineup, Royal Tyrrell Museum offers much more than just things to look at. Guided hikes, digs, camps, and other paid activities highlight a full repertoire of fun and learning. Legit science goes on here too and if you’re visiting on a lucky day, you’ll see palaeontologist or university students preparing actual dinosaurs for study and display.
Drumheller offers plenty of accommodation options from hotels to campgrounds, some dinosaur themed. Fast food, full service restaurants, and a brewery, not to mention a full suite of retail staples, make the town an ideal place for a day trip or lengthier stay when visiting the amazing Royal Tyrrell Museum.
